4 Steps to Accomplish Your Goals and Dreams.
The picture you hang on your fridge. The dream that keeps bugging you constantly. The ‘’ I though of that 2 years ago’’ moment you get when you see someone else start the business you though about. Do all of these phrases remind you of something?
Everybody has dreams. We all want to accomplish something in our lives. Whether it’s small or grandiose, it will always be in us until we decide to do something about it.
Here’s an example of a goal; I want to loose some weight. It’s the New Year and my big resolution is to loose weight. I get a membership at the local gym. The first few weeks are great. I go to the gym and get on that treadmill and lift those weights. I even get a one-hour session with a trainer to get a personalised plan for my training. Then I’m off to the races. Days and weeks pass and I start to skip a training day for whatever reason I give myself. Then suddenly I realise that it has been over one month I have gone to the gym. After some time you stop. What happened to that goal of loosing some weight?
Does this sound familiar? The above reasoning can be applied to any situation in life. Our dreams get pushed aside to give way to our daily lives. Our goals loose their focus. Our comfort zone cries out to us to stay comfortable and not step out into the unknown.
When you look at successful people, you will always see that they decided to plan and take action towards their success. It didn’t come to them on a silver platter (well not all of them). The key words are they ‘’DECIDE, PLAN and ACTION’’. They mapped out the road to success, the road to their achievements.
I would like for you to have a great year and accomplish great things in your life. Here are the steps towards achieving your goals and transform yourself into whatever you desire in life.
1- Find Your WHY
Before planning anything out, you need to find your WHY. It’s your dream, your goal, it’s what you always wanted to accomplish in your life. It’s what you want changed in you. It’s that personal or professional target you have.
Your WHY can be financial independence, starting a business, education, spending more time with your family, appreciate yourself more. You have to connect with your WHY. It’s not an exotic new sports car, it’s the reason why you want that car. It’s not becoming wealthy; it’s why you want more money. Do you want to get out of debt, plan a yearly trip with your family or buy that retirement home you have had your eyes on for so long.
Once you have your WHY, write it down in a journal. Post a picture of it on your fridge. Hang it on your office wall. Each morning say out loud you WHY. Revisit your WHY as often as you can and connect with it. Your WHY has to move you deeply.
2- Establish Your Plan.
How do you do this? You have to be focused only on actions directly related to achieving your plan. Your plan can be updated; this is a path not a prison. Outside events will sometimes come in the way and you will need to adjust. This is perfectly normal. The unexpected will catch up with you and you will need to adjust.
THIS PLAN IS FOR YOU, DO NOT TRY to IMPRESS OTHERS, so don’t overcomplicate this. The more complicated the plan, the less chances you put on your side to succeed. Your plan has to be specific and believable. The simpler the plan, the greater your chances you will get to your WHY.
Breakdown the plan into simple everyday actions. You won’t loose 20 pounds tomorrow, but you can loose 1 or 2 pounds a week. See where I’m going with this? 1 pound is more manageable then 20 pounds. After 20 weeks, your goal will be achieved. What has to be done daily to loose 1 pound a week?
3- Take Action Each And Every Day.
Taking action will be the determining factor in achieving your goals. The difference between successful people and unsuccessful people, is those that succeed take action, they make it happen. Every day, week and month are planned out. It’s written down on a ToDo list, journal or calendar.
Daily actions are put in place. Not one day passes without anything happening. The actions are directly related to achieving the set goal. Your focus has to be laser sharp. It will move you forward.
4- Put Time On Your Side.
This is not a sprint it’s a marathon that you will be running. Don’t expect to achieve your goals instantly. It will take time and perseverance.
Put a deadline on all your actions and goals. Use Parkinson’s law to your advantage. Parkinson’s law is the adage that “work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion”. Does this ring a bell: have you ever postponed writing that term paper to the very last minute and pulled an all-nighter to complete it? You use up a month to do something that could have taken 3 jours. Well that is Parkinson’s law at work. The time you dedicate to a task is the time you will use up to complete it.
Set a maximum amount of time you will spend on each action in your plan. Write it in your calendar and be faithful to your schedule. This is time you put aside for you, honour it and do it. This will bring focus.
These 4 steps are the gateway to a different tomorrow. They will set in motion your dreams and transform them into reality. A dream will always remain a dream until the moment your decided to plan and take action toward accomplishing the dream.
