Better life management skills
In a previous article about multitasking, I mentioned to let go of your ToDo list. That it will rob you of your time until you have none left. These lists take over your life and dictate what you do each day without any thought to why you are doing what you do. Or giving you the artificial feeling that you accomplished something. Your life is misguided by these bullet points on a sheet of paper posted on the fridge door. Stuck to your office desk for you to see each and every day. On your smartphone with a reminder that informs you, you still have things to do. Each time you set your eyes on that list, this creates anxiety and stress.
Your ToDo list constantly makes you feel that you haven’t done enough or you still haven’t finished everything Giving you the feeling of unworthiness and failure. Fear and stress sets in each time you pick up the list, anticipating what has not been done or what was added to the already long page.
Your life is not like doing the groceries, checking off each item once you place them in the shopping cart. Your life is a journey of love, happiness, freedom and fulfillment. Adding stress and fear to the equation only strips you from all the positive emotions and feelings that propel you on your life’s journey. So instead of grabbing that ToDo list, through it away or erase it completely. Start over and give yourself life management skills.
What’s Your Purpose?
Start by finding the purpose in your life. What will bring meaning to your life? You will maybe say a nicer car, more money, 3 vacations a year or buying a bigger house. But this only brings you comfort. What brings meaning to your life is much deeper. It’s what brings you happiness, freedom and friendship. It could be becoming the best at what you do at work or becoming the best parent you can be or providing for the needs of your happy family. What brings meaning to your life is not material, it’s what comes from inside of you and touches you to the core of your soul.
The next step in better life management is to reverse engineer your purpose in life. Use this trick. Draw a line in the middle of a sheet of paper and write down in the left column, where you want to be in one year. Write everything down.
I am spending more time with the people I love.
I have a healthy lifestyle.
I’m the best in my field of work.
I have no debt and I’m financially free.
Be honest with yourself and look back on what you have written. Does it come from deep down inside you? Will you feel pain deep in your gut if you don’t reach it? That’s what brings validation to your purpose. Next, in the right column, write down what you need to do and what you need to learn to get where you want to be in one year down the road.
Write It Down.
Then turn the page over and write down why it’s so important to you. This is the key to imprinting the images and feelings in your brain. It could be that you don’t want to waste any more time on trivial things that don’t bring any meaning for you. It can also be that having a healthier lifestyle will bring you more quality time to spend with your children.
Now that you have your purpose and you reverse engineer it, it’s time to plan it out and take massive action. Take each thing you wrote down in the right column and break in down into manageable actions. This is where the magic starts to happen. Each and every day you will have a target to reach that can only be accomplished if you take massive action. Don’t over complicate the process and start to lose yourself in the details. People fail because they try to focus on many things at the same time. Instead, change your mindset and keep your focus on your purpose. This will bring clarity in your life and reduce wasted time.
So, throw away that ToDo list and show purpose in your life. If you continue to do the same things you have always done, you will continue to get the same results. Change your mindset and take massive action today. You will shift from having your life controlled by others to you taking control back. You will become the master of your life’s journey.
